The femicide crisis in South America is staggering……..

According to the BBC- a woman dies from femicide every other day in Columbia, every day in Argentina, 5 per day in Mexico and 15 per day in Brazil.

The culture of femicide is so ingrained in the lifestyle that on Wednesday, the City Council in Buenos Aires, Argentina, passed an ordinance, introduced by lawmaker Pablo Ferreyra, making it a crime to “catcall” women in the capital city. Doing so can result in a fine of $60 and community service.

Some say that catcalls are harmless and women should consider it a “compliment.” Here’s how Michael Hollan, a writer for Your Tango. explained what’s really going on…….

“The idea that women should appreciate catcalling is weird, because it’s implying that catcalling is done with respect. It suggests that when some guy sees a girl walking down the street and shouts something at her about her body, he’s doing so because he thinks it will make her day better. That’s not what’s happening, not even close. Here’s something that shouldn’t be a secret: guys catcall because they think it will somehow lead to them having sex. I’ve never once see it be successful, but guys keep doing it, and that’s the reason.

Maybe they don’t want to admit it, and guys who catcall usually try to pretend that this isn’t why they’re doing it. They’re lying. The reason they lie about it is because it sounds stupid to say “I yelled at the girl from across the street because I thought she’d stop what she was doing and instead have sex with me.” But that’s what’s really going on, and the guys doing it don’t care if it’s disrespectful.”

Society’s awareness about appropriate sexual conduct is long overdue. I’m hoping this small step toward recognizing offensive behavior will help pave the way toward recognition of the true meaning of sexual consent in our laws:

Consent is knowledgeable and informed agreement that is not induced by any form of coercion, force, duress or deception! 

All laws for sexual consent work both ways, so please ladies, mind your manners too!
