Why electing Hillary is a big deal!

I’m an American. I’ve voted for more years than most Americans have been alive. That means, I was born long before EEOC and Title IX came into existence.

Growing up, I was a springboard diver. I was the City Champ in my town, Columbia, SC. When I went off to college at the University of Georgia, I was allowed access to the “men’s pool” 2 hours per week. And during that time, the diving board was closed because it interfered with people who were “free swimming.” ….. So much for advancing my diving career!

Enter Women’s Lib!

I’ve been heartened, and benefited from the strides that Gloria Steinem, Bella Abzug, and other heroes made to recognize that women have a meaningful role in society. My mother’s role had been as a homemaker and we were totally dependent on my father’s earnings to cover our necessities. It put a dreadful strain on their marriage and frequently destroyed the peace of our family. Today, it’s common for mothers to work, and even succeed in a career.

I grew up right at the cusp of women’s lib, and I was torn between my upbringing that assured me that “caretaker” was my destiny, and my interest in independence. When I broke ground as the first female Trader for Salomon Brothers, a highly acclaimed investment banking firm, it was a big deal. Today, loads of women hold trading positions and roles of authority within the financial community. Breaking the glass ceiling matters! And I was truly blessed to be in the right place, with the right knowledge, at the right time.

Gender-affected politics

Hillary is up against a blatant example of testosterone laced Narcissism. I’m not saying that all men are like “Donald Trump,” but he exemplifies everything that’s wrong with a large portion of “male dominated” society. He is condescending toward women, ogling, and disparaging us at the same time. He displays a lack of morality that would make our forefathers roll over in their graves. He has ruthlessly conducted business in a manner that has damaged countless people. And his stated financial policies for the US demonstrate that he will continue his gross manipulation on the world stage. This time, not only will he damage his own reputation, but that of the United States as well.

We live in a society where people do not understand the concept of “consent” when it comes to sexual relations. Donald Trumps’ first wife, Ivanna, accused him of rape in a sordid episode during their marriage. His only defense was that it’s not rape if you’re married to the woman. An attorney for Trump parroted this concept very recently, subsequent to his announcing his candidacy, and Trump has remained silent over this issue. The press has not called him on his dreadfully misogynist thinking.

#SexualAssaultByFraud LawTrump is of the same mentality that pervades our criminal code, largely determined and carried out by men. Even in America we live in a world where a woman’s sexual sanctity can be grossly undermined, and nothing will happen. Brock Turner’s father termed his son’s rape of an unconscious woman “20 minutes of action.” And instead of sending this rapist to jail for 14 years, which is the common punishment in his jurisdiction, the male judge gave him a 6 month sentence, of which Turner is likely to serve only 3 months.

So what’s politics got to do with rape law?

“Consent” is of utmost importance in all sexual activity. And “consent” does not mean whatever you can be tricked into. There is a vast difference between “assent” and “consent” both under the law and in common English usage. It’s not rocket science!

In order for your agreement to qualify as “consent” you must be knowledgeable and informed. And until women, who grasp what sexual exploitation is, are responsible for law-making, rape mentality will be pervasive throughout society.

Putting a woman in the White House is paramount in changing how women, and even men (but in lesser number) are sexually exploited in the world. Women can change the laws that currently enable rape mentality.

Plus….  a women President will be an inspiration to every female child growing up in American society today! They will value themselves in a way that will be more resistant to the manipulation of sexual predators!

I posted this comment as a response to an article in SheThePeopleTV. Here’s the link. It’s worth reading.

  1. Not Hillary Clinton! She’s dishonest as can be! if there were another woman more honarable than she, I’d agree. None of the candidates fit the bill to be honest with you.  Alisa S. Dunn
